James Austen, a senior associate in Charles Russell Speechlys' private client department, has been appointed as a Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, assigned to the Tax Chamber, where he will sit on a part-time basis.
As a Tribunal judge, Mr Austen will hear and determine appeals against decisions by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in respect of both direct and indirect taxes.
Mr Austen will combine his judicial office with his practice at the firm, where he specialises in tax and trust advice to individuals and trustees - particularly those with rural estates and business interests.
Mr Austen - who was named as an eprivateclient Top 35 Under 35 in 2013 - said that he "looks forward to using his experience of private practice in his judicial work and vice versa; his work at the Tribunal will complement and enhance the service we provide to our clients."
